| Don Boll, Scribner Participated in basketball, baseball and track at Scriber (no football program there at the time). In the spring of 1945, he became one the "Few Good Men", enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. While in boot camp at Parris Island he was spotted by a Nebraska alumnus, Lt. Col. Lyman Spurlock, who talked him into playing football for the Quantico Marines. He played either tackle or guard. They were all Navy champions and he was picked on the all Navy team. He attended the University of Nebraska, lettering three years and was selected to the All Big Seven team as a guard. In 1953, he went the pro training camp in California and was signed by the Washington Redskins and played with them for seven years. He was selected Rookie of the year in 1953. In 1960 he was traded to the New York Giants. He played for the Giants for one year. |

SCRIBNER -- Don E. Boll, 74, of Scribner died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point.
He was born July 16, 1927, in Scribner. He attended country school near Scribner and graduated from Scribner High School in 1945. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from June 6, 1945, until his discharge July 5, 1949, at the rank of sergeant. He was recruited out of the Marine Corps to play football at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated from there in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. He lettered on the Cornhusker football team all four years of college and was named to the All Big Seven Team. He married Priscilla Fowler Dec. 30, 1952, in Grand Island. He played football for the Washington Redskins from 1952-59 and then played one year for the New York Giants in 1960. Upon retiring from his football career, he began working at Safeway Foods in Omaha. He transferred to Memphis, Tenn., in 1966 and worked for the Double Cola Company. He transferred again to Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1974 and worked there until he retired due to ill health in 1981. He had lived in Scribner since 1986. He had been a resident of Good Samaritan Center since 1999. He moved to Scribner from Chattanooga and had also lived in Memphis, Omaha and Lincoln.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Scribner, Scribner American Legion Post 121, NFL Players Association, the Tri C's at church and was active at the Milligan Over 60 Center. He was honored by the Scribner Chamber of Commerce in 1974 with the Native Son Award. He was inducted into the University of Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1992 and also was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
Survivors include: his wife; three sons, Pete (and wife, Vickie) Boll of Pocatello, Idaho, Eric Boll of Portales, N.M., and Edward (and wife, Jean) Boll of Sanborn, Iowa; a daughter, Brianne (Mrs. Doug) Frizzell of Scribner; six sisters, Genene (Mrs. Gene) Meissner of Omaha, Leadamae Asebroek of Custer, S.D., Ranitta Piland of Fordland, Mo., Diane (Mrs. Chuck) Dunton of San Antonio, Christy (Mrs. Vincent) Taibbi of Brevard, N.C., and Ann (Mrs. Scott) Little of Memphis; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
