Vern Ekfelt
Omaha

Coach. Omaha. Wrestling-baseball coach at Omaha Central (1943-48) and Omaha North (1948-74). A key figure in the development of high school wrestling in the state of Nebraska.

Coach Ekfelt wrestled for four years at the University of Iowa without having had the benefit of a high school program. He entered the coaching ranks at Omaha Central during the years of 1942 to 1946 and managed to win the state title three of those four years. In 1946, he became a coach-administrator at Omaha North. During his 18-year tenure at North, his teams won one state team title and produced 51 individual state champions. He instituted the then North High Tournament and groomed it into one of the premier prep meets in the state. That tournament now bears his name in honor of his years of dedicated service.

Mr. Ekfelt was also active as a wrestling official for some 20 years besides his coaching duties.
